Friends of Lockwood is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to enriching and enhancing the lives of the students of Lockwood Avenue Elementary, a school located in a low income area of Hollywood which receives limited funding for extracurricular activities. The goal of this grass roots organization is to organize and produce fun educational opportunities for the Lockwood Elementary students outside the classroom.
Friends of Lockwood was originally formed by a group of friends that personally sponsored Lockwood Elementary School students to visit Disneyland in December 2002. Due the overwhelming interest and support by the individuals involved in the Disneyland trip, the group began organizing and sponsoring other events and projects for Lockwood Elementary School and the Disneyland trip became an annual event.
Currently, Friends of Lockwood plans and funds six to eight events and projects each year for the students. The events include Art Day, Career Day, Fall Festival, special interest assemblies, and the annual trip to Disneyland for 50 well deserving students. In addition, in 2016 Friends of Lockwood established the Friends of Lockwood Scholarship through Los Angeles City College Foundation which is awarded annually to a student at LACC who attended or has a child that attends Lockwood Elementary School.
Lockwood Elementary School is a Los Angeles Unified School District school comprising of approximately 500 students between pre-kindergarten and sixth grade. Approximately 98% of the students are considered socioeconomically disadvantaged and 100% of the students participate in the free or reduced price lunch program. The ethnic racial makeup of students is: 86% Hispanic or Latino; 9% Filipino; 5% other. Approximately 73% of the students are considered English language learners. The students have very little exposure to much outside of their immediate neighborhood, therefore they benefit greatly from field trips, special presentations and other activities provided by Friends of Lockwood.
